PRAN and the National Pension System

If you are newly appointed to Kerala Government service you are on the National Pension System, not the old pension scheme. The Finance Department states that the State adopted the National Pension System and implemented it for all appointments made on or after 1 April 2013. Your Permanent Retirement Account Number is generated by the central record-keeping agency, not inside SPARK — SPARK only receives and displays it.

Steps

  1. Who is covered

The Finance Department states the scheme applies to all appointments made on or after 1 April 2013, under a Government Order dated 7 January 2013.

  2. Whose subject this is

The Finance NPS Cell is stated to be the authority dealing with the National Pension System in the State. Kerala PSC has no role in it.

  3. What the number is

A unique lifetime account number under the scheme, portable across employers, with records maintained by the central record-keeping agency named on the Finance Department’s own page.

  4. It is not generated inside SPARK

SPARK’s own guidance states the number will be automatically updated in SPARK, and that if it is not there, an email should be sent to the State Nodal Officer’s cell with the name, employee number and account number for updating. That confirms it is generated externally and synced in.

  5. What you provide

Personal, bank and nominee details, usually collected by your Drawing and Disbursing Officer at the same stage as your SPARK record. The registration workflow on the record-keeper’s side is not something we could verify, so we do not describe it step by step.

  6. How long it takes is not published

No official timeline from joining to a working account number was found. We do not quote one.

Frequently asked questions

Am I automatically on the National Pension System?#

Yes, if you were appointed on or after 1 April 2013. The Finance Department states the scheme was implemented for all appointments from that date.

Do I apply for my own PRAN?#

Not directly to the record-keeper. It is generated centrally and synced into SPARK; where it is missing, SPARK directs employees to email the State Nodal Officer’s cell.

Is the pension scheme a Kerala PSC matter?#

No. The Finance NPS Cell is the stated authority. The Commission’s role ended at your advice.

How long does the account number take?#

Not published in anything we could find. We will not quote a figure.
