Licence, badge and the practical test for Kerala PSC driver posts

Kerala PSC driver posts require a valid driving licence with badge for the relevant vehicle classes, held continuously through every stage of the selection, followed by a two-stage practical drive: a proficiency check the Commission calls a T-test in some notifications and an H-test on its own practical-test schedule pages, and then a road test for those who pass it. A Physical Efficiency Test applies as well, at driver-specific standards.

Steps

  1. Hold the licence classes the notification names

    Police Constable Driver under Category 416/2023 required Motor Cycle with Gear, Light Motor Vehicle, Heavy Passenger Vehicle and Heavy Goods Vehicle licences, all with badge and all current.

  2. Keep it valid at every stage

    The notification states the licence must be held throughout all stages of the selection process — application, written test, physical test, practical test and verification. A lapse anywhere is a problem.

  3. Check whether a minimum licence age applies

    KERAFED Driver under Category 300/2023 required the Heavy Motor Vehicle licence to be of at least three years’ standing. Not every driver post carries this — read yours.

  4. Pass the proficiency test before the road test

    Category 300/2023 states that a practical test including a T-test will be conducted to assess proficiency in driving, and only those who qualify in it will be considered for the road test. The Commission’s own schedule page for Category 659/2017 in the Excise Department uses the term H-test for the equivalent stage. Both terms are genuine and post-specific; do not assume one universal name.

  5. Expect a two-part medical certificate

    Category 416/2023 uses a form with a vision part signed by a Government Ophthalmologist and a general-fitness part signed by an Assistant Surgeon or Junior Consultant, covering epilepsy, vertigo, heart and lung conditions, hearing, finger deformity and substance use.

  6. The PET standard is set separately for drivers

    Under Category 416/2023 the driver PET standards were measurably less demanding than the combat-role posts — 15 seconds for the 100 m against 14 seconds under Category 537/2022, for example. Read your own table.

Frequently asked questions

What is the H-test?#

A practical driving-proficiency test. The term appears on the Commission’s own practical-test schedule page for Driver under Category 659/2017 in the Excise Department, so it is official — but other notifications call the equivalent stage a T-test. Go by your own post’s documents.

Does my licence need to be a certain number of years old?#

Sometimes. KERAFED Driver under Category 300/2023 required at least three years’ standing on the heavy vehicle licence. Other driver notifications may not. Check yours.

Is the driving test scored on speed?#

Not in the notifications we examined. The practical test is described as assessing proficiency, and the road test follows it — neither is published as a timed or graded speed metric.

Is the medical certificate different for driver posts?#

Yes. Category 416/2023 uses a two-part form covering epilepsy, vertigo, heart and lung disorders, hearing, finger deformity and substance use, with the vision part signed by a Government Ophthalmologist — more detailed than the single form used for other uniformed posts we examined.
