The validity period of a Kerala PSC ranked list

Kerala PSC states that a ranked list remains in force for one year from the date it was brought into force, and continues in force until a new list is published after that minimum year, or until three years expire, whichever is earlier. Only the Commission can decide an extension, and it publishes the specific conditions under which one applies.

  1. The rule, in the Commission’s words

    Rule 13 of the Commission’s own Rules of Procedure, echoed on its Doubts and Facts page: the ranked lists published by the Commission remain in force for a period of one year from the date on which it was brought into force, provided that the said list will continue to be in force till the publication of a new list after the expiry of the minimum period of one year, or till the expiry of 3 years, whichever is earlier.

  2. What the two limits mean in practice

    One year is the floor: a list cannot be replaced before it. Three years is the ceiling: a list cannot outlive it. Between those, a new list ending the old one is the usual event.

  3. Extensions exist, but are the Commission’s call

    The Commission’s Validity of Ranked Lists page sets out the circumstances in which a list’s life is extended, including where no candidate has been advised. Read that page for the case that applies; the decision is the Commission’s alone.

  4. Some lists run on their own clock

    Lists for training courses that lead to direct appointment, and certain forestry courses, carry their own shorter validity rules set out on the same page.

  5. Why it matters for your chances

    Advice can only be issued while the list is in force. A vacancy reported after a list has expired is not filled from that list.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Kerala PSC rank list valid for three years?#

Three years is the maximum, not the norm. The Commission’s rule is one year minimum, continuing until a new list is published after that year or until three years expire, whichever is earlier.

Can the validity be extended?#

Yes, in circumstances the Commission sets out on its Validity of Ranked Lists page, and only by the Commission.

What happens when a list expires?#

It ceases to be a source of advice. Vacancies reported after expiry are dealt with under the next selection.

Can an addendum revive an expired rank list?#

No. The Commission has the power to correct clerical, typographical, arithmetical or other mistakes in ranked, advice and short lists. That is a correction power, not a mechanism to extend or revive an expired list, and it is unrelated to a supplementary list.

A vacancy was reported on the day my list expired. Which list fills it?#

Not addressed in the vacancy-reporting proforma or the validity rule — no cutoff time is published. If your case turns on it, put the question to the Commission rather than relying on an assumption.
