Probability list, short list and ranked list — the difference

A Kerala PSC probability list names register numbers found provisionally eligible for inclusion in the ranked list, subject to verification of originals. A short list names those provisionally eligible to be called for a further stage such as an interview or main examination. Both are published in numerical order, not in rank order — only the ranked list orders candidates by merit.

Steps

  1. Probability list

    Used where nothing stands between the written test and document verification. It is explicitly provisional and subject to verification of the original documents, and it does not tell you your rank.

  2. Short list

    Used where a further stage exists — an interview, a main examination, or a physical test. Again provisional, again in numerical order.

  3. Ranked list

    The merit list, ordered by rank, with the Commission’s own tie-breaking rules. This is the list from which advice is issued.

  4. Why the ordering confuses people

    Seeing your register number early in a probability list means nothing about your rank — the list is sorted numerically. The number is a serial, not a position.

Is a short list final?#

Which list decides appointment?#

The ranked list. Advice for appointment is issued from it, subject to the reservation rotation and the list still being in force.

Several posts shared one preliminary exam. Is there one short list or several?#

The Commission publishes a separate short list per category number rather than one list across the posts. Nothing states a single cut-off applies to all of them.
