KAS age limits, stream by stream
KAS sets a different age band for each stream: 21 to 32 for Stream 1, 21 to 40 for Stream 2, and an upper limit of 50 for Stream 3, all reckoned as on 1 January of the year the notification is published. The usual community and category relaxations apply on top, subject to a hard ceiling — the maximum age limit shall in no case exceed 50 years.
Steps
The reckoning date
Age is reckoned as on 1 January of the year in which applications are invited, the same convention Kerala PSC uses across its recruitments.
Stream 1 — 21 to 32
In the 2019 cycle this meant candidates born between 2 January 1987 and 1 January 1998. The band is fixed by the Special Rules; only the birth-date window moves with the notification year.
Stream 2 — 21 to 40, Stream 3 — up to 50
Stream 2 uses the same reckoning date with a higher ceiling. Stream 3 states an upper limit only: the candidate must not have completed 50 years on 1 January of the notification year.
The relaxations
Five years for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, three years for Other Backward Communities, fifteen years for blind, deaf or speech-disabled candidates, ten years for orthopaedically disabled candidates, five years for widows, and for ex-servicemen the period of service plus the period of unemployment up to five years.
The ceiling nothing crosses
Both the Special Rules and the notification state independently that the maximum age limit shall in no case exceed 50 years. Relaxation stops there regardless of category or stream.
Service conditions are separate from age
Stream 2 requires regularisation or two years in a supernumerary post; Stream 3 requires completed probation in the current cadre. Meeting the age band does not by itself satisfy those.
Frequently asked questions
Can relaxation take me past 50 for KAS?#
No. The notification and the Special Rules both state that the maximum age limit shall in no case exceed 50 years.
Is the KAS age band the same every year?#
The bands are fixed by the Special Rules; the birth-date window shifts with the notification year. Read the exact dates printed in your own cycle’s notification.
Is there a minimum age for Stream 3?#
The rules state only the upper limit of 50 for Stream 3. No lower bound is published, so we do not state one.
